History of Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg, Texas was settled by German immigrants in the mid-1800s. One of my personal favorite things about Fredericksburg is that they group of German who settled Fredericksburg are the only group to make a treaty with Native Americans and not break it. The Fredericksburg founder John O. Meusebach agreed with the local Comanche tribes that they would allow the settlers of Fredericksburg to farm a section of the Llano River and in return the Comanche tribes would be welcome in town at any time and the people of Fredericksburg would food-provide support in times of Comanche need.

A great listen on your way to Fredericksburg comes from the Wise About Texas Podcast – Episode 111 which explores the Great Easter Fires of Fredericksburg (available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify)

Where to Stay in Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg has many distinctive overnight accommodations.

Visitors can stay at the Barons Creek Vineyard and be close to their new favorite wine…

Stay at the Fredericksburg Brewing Company Bed & Brew on the downtown strip and enjoy a complimentary beer…

Enjoy a traditional Bed & Breakfast at the Hoffman Haus close enough to walk to downtown with nice weather but spread out on its own homestead style ranch.

Wineries in Fredericksburg

A hot spot in Texas for its many wineries, Fredericksburg has both tasting rooms downtown and wineries outside of town that you can visit and have a tasting at. With many to choose from, some of the wineries distinguish themselves with unique themes like the Safari winery which features wines from South Africa.

Wine tastings in Fredericksburg will run anywhere from $10 to $40 dollars. However each vineyard has different numbers of wines you can taste, some have complimentary glasses, and others have lucrative wine clubs where you can save big on a few bottles of wine to take home with you.

Some of the top rated wineries include the Barons Creek Vineyards, the Pontotoc Vineyard Weingarten, and the Lost Draw Cellars.

Barons Creek Vineyards is located right outside the town of Fredericksburg on your way to Luckenbach. They offer wine tastings from $25 per person, wine and food pairings, and even feature accommodations there at the winery so you can stay and not have far to travel to your bed after enjoying their delicious wines and

The Pontotoc Vineyard and Weingarten offers 4 wine tastings at $20 per person at their downtown tasting room styled after the heurigen of Austria and their wines are from grapes grown in the Texas Hill Country Region.

The Lost Draw Cellars have a 5 wine tasting that costs $20 per person. This Fredericksburg winery asks that you make reservations ahead of your wine tasting. They feature some food options and have a highly recommended wine club. Lost Draw Cellars is located near downtown Fredericksburg out off of highway 16 (near the HEB).

Visitors who want to make the most of their wine tastings without having to worry about a designated driver can check out the wine bus of 290 Wine Shuttle. This tour agency offers visitors a unique way to travel from vineyard to vineyard within Fredericksburg at their leisure with the hop on-hop off method. They offer all day passes for $40 per person and the bus travels the wineries on their route stopping approximately every 10 minutes at each vineyard.

Breweries in Fredericksburg

For those who enjoy an adult beverage but are not that into wine there are two brewery options in Fredericksburg to choose from.

The first is Fredericksburg Brewery located in the heart of downtown. This brewery features their own unique take on the Bed & Breakfast concept offering a Bed & Brew accommodation where instead of a breakfast in the morning, each adult guest gets a token for a beer to be enjoyed at the Brewery. With a selection of German Food in addition to their craft beers, the Fredericksburg Brewery is a great stop during a day of shopping downtown Fredericksburg.

The second brewery is Altstadt Brewery located a little outside the heart of Fredericksburg off of highway 290 (on the way to Luckenbach and near Barons Creek Vineyard). The Altstadt Brewery also features a German menu and their craft beers have a German flare to them (keeping with the history of the Fredericksburg area). With a more expansive ground, Altstadt Brewery has more of the craft brewery/destination location when compared to the more restaurant feel of the Fredericksburg Brewery.

Luckenbach, Texas

One of the most well-known destinations in Texas thanks to the famous Back to the Basics by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, Luckenbach, Texas is a great day trip from Fredericksburg. We were excited to visit this iconic town and it surpassed our expectations.

With food trucks, a bar, souvenir shops, and live music, visitors to Luckenbach can spend as much time as they want in this quaint Texas town.

Shops in Fredericksburg

Downtown

Fredericksburg is well known for its fabulous (if expensive) shops that are located on the downtown blocks. There is a shop for every taste from home furnishings, children’s boutiques, ladies fashion, a small Luckenbach souvenir shop, ice cream parlors, and more!

Many of the stores are housed in historic buildings from Fredericksburg’s founding.

Parking can be a bit tricky. If lucky, one might find parking off the main street but backing out of your spot when it is time to leave can be treacherous as it is difficult to see the oncoming traffic. If you are unable to find parking on the main thoroughfare, there are many side streets with parking. Once you have secured a spot for your vehicle, the main downtown section is easy to walk.

Antique Stores

For visitors who are looking for a less upscale shopping option (or for those who want the best of both worlds) there are many flea markets and antique stores on the outskirts of Fredericksburg, Texas. Close to downtown Fredericksburg, Texas visitors can find the highly rated Antique Mall of Fredericksburg and just down the road is the Red Baron Antique Mall.

Fredericksburg Trade Days is by far the largest and most popular of the antique store offerings but it is only offered on the 3rd weekend of every month. If visiting flea markets is your thing, it is worth planning your trip around the weekends Fredericksburg Trade Days is open as you could spend all day going from vendor to vendor at this large flea market.

Enchanted Rock

While there is much to explore in the Fredericksburg area, one place that visitors should out at the top of their list is the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. The most popular activity to do at Enchanted Rock is hiking on the summit trail to the top of the 425 foot tall pink granite dome that the park’s namesake. Not long (at about a mile) but steep, this hike may not be suitable for those with small children or elderly. However it is still worth visiting the Park to see the Enchanted Rock and even hike some of the less challenging tails that the park offers.

Visit out Enchanted Rock post to help plan your trip to this unique Texas landmark.
